Samsung’s handset of the year has finally gone official. The GALAXY series is what made the Korean electronics company the world’s biggest smartphone maker. The first gen GALAXY was a great alternative to the iPhone. With Nokia struggling with its ageing Symbian platform, the GALAXY S became an instant hit. Later, Samsung releases the GALAXY S II and S III. Both these handsets were a meaningful upgrade, and hence did extremely well in the market. Needless to say, Samsung fans had high hopes from the S4 — new design, revamped UI, killer camera, and whatnot. Sadly, the S4 didn’t deliver on those counts. Since Android fans are full of patience (thanks to lag and slow-downs), majority of them waited for the “ground breaking” GALAXY S5. Prior launch, rumours suggested that Samsung will not only change the design, but will also overhaul the TouchWiz interface. Much to their dismay, Samsung didn’t think that these changes were necessary. So yesterday, at the “Unpacked” even, the world got just another GALAXY handset that looks exactly like the S4, S3, Grand, Grand 2, and Grand Quattro (and basically every other Samsung phone). This leads us to a very basic question: “Why should I spend premium on the S5, if it looks similar to Samsung’s sub-15k handsets?

At launch events, Samsung generally talks about hardware specifications. However, this time around, the bump in the processor’s clock-speed wasn’t significant enough to brag about. Similarly there’s nothing new terms of screen tech. It’s still a full HD AMOLED panel with 1920x1080 pixels. The display size has gone up by 0.1-inch, which is not even worth mentioning. Moreover, the software remained mostly the same. So to attract the customers, Samsung did what they’re good at — copying. Here’s the list of S5’s “breakthrough” features that are actually inspired by its competitors.

Biometric Sensor
Inspired by the iPhone 5s, Samsung's latest flagship sports a 'Finger Scanner'. This biometric technology will be used for unlocking the phone and for authorising app purchases. It’s true that Apple wasn’t the first company to integrate a fingerprint scanner on a phone, but it certainly made it popular. Moreover, Samsung’s implementation is very much like that of the Cupertino-based company.


Selective Focus
The GALAXY S5’s 16 megapixel camera offers Selective Focus feature. This software allows users to focus on a specific object while blurring out the background. Sounds familiar? Water And Dust Resistance
The Korean company kept the uninspiring design intact. However, Samsung made it compliant to (Ingress Protection) IP67 standards. In simple words, the phone is dust and water resistant. That’s definitely a good thing. However, the credit for making premium waterproof devices goes to Sony.
