08th Jul 2013In 2007, Apple took the smartphone industry by storm with its iPhone. Despite its steep pricing, people camped outside the stores to buy this handset. In no time, the Cupertino-based company brought Nokia down to its knees. iPhone’s higher profit margin was one of the important aspects that helped Apple beat Microsoft to become the most valuable tech company in the world. So after establishing its iPhone as an aspirational product, does Apple really need to rollout a budget version in the market? As far my as my understanding of the industry goes, the answer is “No”.
Unlike Samsung and Nokia, Apple has always envisioned iPhone to be a single premium phone by the company. Even the company’s SVP of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, had denied this rumour saying “Despite the popularity of cheap smartphones, this will never be the future of Apple’s products. In fact, although Apple’s market share of smartphones is just about 20%, we own 75% of the profit.”
However, this wasn’t enough to put an end to the rumours. The speculations continued, and picked up steam when the so called leaked images of the budget iPhone’s casing showed up. The picture suggested that the budget iPhone will have Lumia 620-esque colourful replaceable shells.
Now a Chinese company, Techdy, known for manufacturing knock-offs, claim to have acquired the upcoming iPhone. The company has also put up a gallery and hands-on video on its official blog. The article goes on to state that “When we hold the budget iPhone in our hands, the plastic chassis does not feel cheap at all. Unlike the plastic build quality of the Samsung Galaxy phones, the plastic material used on the budget iPhone feels more sturdy (sturdier).”
Sounds good, but watch the video carefully, and you can see that the phone lacks the lock button and volume rocker. That clearly leads to a conclusion that these images and video are fake. See it for yourself:
In Steve Job’s signature keynote style, the article presents you ‘One More Thing’. Techdy claims that they have manufactured a budget Android device based on Apple's yet-to-be announced phone. Dubbed as the Basic Bear, it features a 4” display with 1136x640 pixels, 1.7 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB storage, 8 megapixel rear camera with LED flash, and 2300 mAh battery. It’s priced at $199, and comes in 5 colors.
I think, Techdy has been faking budget iPhone just to get some traction for its Android handset. Obviously, slapping the Apple logo on one of its phones is way easier than smuggling in an unannounced Apple device.
With everything taken into consideration, whom would you like to believe? A shady Chinese company or Apple’s Phil Schiller? Sound off in the comments section below.
