After months of silence, Samsung went on a rampage and rolled out the Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.2) update to a number of its phones and tablets. Among phones, the newer Galaxy Note 2 (N7100) and Galaxy S III (I9300) obviously received the update first, the Galaxy S2 (I9100) received it a few days ago, and the Galaxy Note (GT-N7000) is expected to receive it any day now.

What Does Jelly Bean Bring?
Among other things, the new features Jelly Bean brings to all four of the above devices are:
 - Premium suite pack.
 - Nature UI, like the Note 2 and S3.
 - Multi-View (multi-window multitasking, like on the Note 2).
 - Smart Stay (if your eyes are looking at the screen, it will stay on).
 - Smart Rotation (screen display adjusts according to angle of sightings).
 - Brightness Slider now in Notification Panel (can be disabled).
 - Notification Panel can be customised, more Toggles available.
 - Customizable new Lockscreen, with Widgets and Facebook feed.
 - Continuous Input in Samsung Keyboard (like Swype or Android 4.2 Keyboard).
 - Pop-up Play, Direct Call, Page Buddy.
 - Paper Artist and Group Cast apps.
 - New Gallery app.
 - Samsung Cloud services incorporated.
 - Google Now, for enhanced accessibility and flaunt-value.

Samsung says Google's "Project Butter" has been implemented, yet I see users complaining that the interface isn't as smooth and fast as it should be. Slow app switching and stutters were still noticeable to me as well. As announced previously, Samsung is upgrading firmware of many of its other devices as well.

Owners of the Salaxy S3 in India got the update over-the-air (OTA) starting from January 10th. If you did not receive it when you checked for updates, you can manually install by downloading from SamMobile.

What is the "Sudden Death" issue?
The phenomenon is exactly what the term means. You could be in a garden singing Kumbaya one fine morning, and all of a sudden your Galaxy S3 would die. As dead as a dodo, without any apparent external factors triggering it.

You can see discussion threads about this on Reddit and XDA-dev forum. Seemingly widespread, hackers came up with a fix for this problem while Samsung's stop-gap solution was to replace affected units regardless of whether the user had installed a custom ROM. For a small period of time, owners of an affected 16GB Galaxy S3 toyed with deliberately installing a ROM that accelerated killed the phone, so as to get a replacement.

It was then announced that Samsung's next firmware upgrade would solve the problem. Thus the issue was laid to rest late in November, or in early-January depending on when an S3 owner updated their phone's firmware. Samsung isn't isolated in experiencing issues in a top-end phone, the LG Nexus 4 phone has been dealing with some issues as well, since its launch, such as the front glass breaking.
