31st May 2012Ever thought about the wonders of the ancient pyramids of Egypt while watching Discovery Channel or NGC? Well, you don't have to fret about visiting them physically; you can experience them in full, three dimensional glory, right from your living room. A project dubbed Giza 3D by Dassault Systèmes has made it possible for anyone to take a walk through the Giza Plateau, home of the historic Giza Necropolis, in a virtual world that has been built to perfection.
Visitors can make use of a guided tour of selected monuments, as a general introduction. They can also visit carefully restored tombs, shafts, and connected burial chambers. Four of the site's ancient temples, including Khufu and Menkaure's pyramid can also be reached. Additionally, you can browse contemporary and ancient pictures and view thirty objects that have been precisely reconstructed in 3D.
Before you start off, make sure that your computer system meets these minimum Microsoft Windows PC requirements:
- OS: Windows 32 or 64 bits (XP, Vista, or 7)
- Processor: Pentium IV 2.5 GHz or AMD equivalent
- Memory: 2 GB RAM
- Graphic card: Compatible with Pixel Shaders 3.0 (512 MB VRAM)
- Sound card: Compatible with DirectX 9.0c
It also works on the Apple Mac, although you will be able view it only in Firefox that too in the 32-bit mode. To set Firefox to run in 32 bit mode by default, open up Finder and go to the Applications folder. Control-click the Firefox app and click "Get Info", then select the "Open in 32-bit mode" option. Needless to say, you can enjoy the stereoscopic 3D experience, only if you have a 3D monitor or 3D TV. It will appear as 3D rendered on a 2D plane when using non-3D displays. Take a look at the video, to find out what to expect before you jump in.
